One of the oldest and most renowned ministries in the ancient days that cut across the Old Testament to the New Testament (starting from Abraham) is Prophetic Ministry.
Equally too, were the baru-priest, ashipu-priest (who were connected with exorcism or divination), and the ecstatic or Mahhum of Mesopotamia.
Today, many people are being thrown into pandemonium with unattained ability to discern the Nabhi, Roeh and Hozeh from ashipu, baru-priest or ecstatic prophet, by placing the mark of a true prophet on foretelling rather than forth telling.
Prophetism is said to have legitimately began with historic Moses in Israel who became a standard of comparison for all subsequent prophetic personages. What must not be forgotten is that Hebrew prophets had no hereditary claim to the office nor could they appropriate the title of Nabhi by virtue of political appointment. Rather, it was by calling from God with the Divine Spirit in connection with the utterances.
Most important to note is that a true prophet was a person who knew God in the immediacy of experience; who was inescapably constrained to utter the word revealed to him by inspiration; who discerned the life of men in the light of his divine vision; and who brought the spiritual issues of existence into focus by challenging his hearers to respond to divine standards of spirituality through acts of cleansing and renewal of life. This course has much to offer to students who yearn to know more.
